Since the development and advancements of various technologies in the field of biological sciences, it is now possible to rapidly generatehuge amounts of data
However, the extraction of biologically useful information from such an enormous data is still challenging.
Therefore, computational and statistical methodsalong with experimental approaches should
be employed together to extract the hidden information from such datasets.
This combination of various scientific fields leads to the birth of aninterdisciplinary area called
as bioinformatics.
Bioinformatics is an academic field that aims to solve a variety of complex and challenging problems in biology based on bigdata by combining knowledge and technologies from various fields such as biology, physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and statistics.
Our laboratory has been actively using bioinformatics approaches to perform research in multiple fields of animal sciences.
Specifically, our research is focused atanalyzinganimal mitochondrial genomes, and molecular phylogenetics of marine invertebrates such as Heterobranchia.
We also apply machine learning techniques for mitochondrial and 18S rRNAgenes to identify vertebrate and invertebrate species.
In addition, we investigate urban biodiversity in cooperation with scientists and residents.
Currently, we are cultivating next-generation talents who study and work in the field of bioinformatics.
